Old Dominion University Outfits New Presidential Home with Geothermal

The President of Old Dominion University is upgrading to some more presidential-like digs with his new 5,600 square-foot home. While the new home obviously flaunts a new aesthetic upgrade, it also features an energy efficient and eco-friendly construction including a geothermal heating and cooling system.

ODU President John Broderick and his family moved into the 2.2 million dollar home last week and have been enjoying the benefits of their geothermal cooling system during this hot summer. The appropriately sized system provides enough air condition to keep the large home a comfortable temperature even during the longest and most humid Virginia days.

The Broderick family are not the only ones who will get to enjoy this magnificent brick house. Along with future ODU presidents, the Presidential home has long been used as a gathering place for students, faculty, alumni and visitors. Donna Koch, the wife of former President James Koch hosted hundreds of parties and described the presidential home as a “home away from home” for students, faculty and other visitors.

The new home also features solar hot water to add to its green appeal. With the four towering white pillars marking the entrance to the home, the Brodericks are sure to attract hundreds of guests to the many events they will host this year. Fortunately for everyone, the temperature inside the home will not be a concern with the reliable and energy efficient geothermal heating and cooling system installed.
